A side-mount sand filter for a swimming pool — in this case with a 550mm diameter (about 22 inches) — is mainly used for cleaning the water. Here's what it does: It filters out dirt, debris, oils, and small particles from the pool water. Water from the pool is pushed through the sand inside the filter tank. The sand traps the dirt, and clean water flows back into the pool. "Side mount" just means the multiport valve (the control lever) is mounted on the side of the filter tank rather than on the top — often making maintenance easier, especially if space above the filter is tight. As for the 550mm size, that's considered medium-small — usually good for residential pools up to maybe 20,000–30,000 liters (around 5,000–8,000 gallons), depending on your pump strength and how often you run the system.
