A side mount sand filter for a swimming pool (in your case, 450 mm diameter, or 450 dia) is used mainly for filtration — that is, to clean the water by removing dirt, debris, and fine particles. Here's the simple breakdown: "Side mount" means the multiport valve (the handle you turn for backwash, rinse, filter, etc.) is mounted on the side of the filter tank, not on top. "450 dia" means the filter tank is 450 mm across — that's a small to medium size, good for pools like small residential pools, plunge pools, or even large spas. It pumps pool water through sand inside the tank — dirt gets trapped in the sand bed, and clean water flows back into the pool. You occasionally need to backwash (reverse the flow) to clean out the trapped dirt from the sand.
